Grok 4.5 Launches July 9: Musk Calls It Opus-Class, Same Day as GPT-5.6

While Washington cleared GPT-5.6 for public launch, Elon Musk picked the same date for xAI’s answer: Grok 4.5 goes public July 9, 2026. Musk posted on X July 8 that the model is “Opus-level” — Anthropic’s flagship tier — but faster, more token-efficient, and cheaper (Bloomingbit, Eastleigh Voice).

July 9, 2026 is now double flagship day: OpenAI Sol vs xAI Grok 4.5. For builders, that is a feature — two frontier drops to stress-test the same agent harness.

From private beta to public (what we know)

June 28: Musk said Grok 4.5 entered private beta at SpaceX and Tesla on the new V9 foundation (~1.5T parameters per press estimates).

July 8: Musk confirms public release July 9 after strongly positive beta feedback.

Still TBD at publish time: official API pricing, public SWE-bench cards, and full subscription tier map — watch x.ai release notes Thursday.

Why Musk is framing it as “Opus-class”

Musk’s positioning targets Anthropic’s premium tier, not OpenAI’s midrange Terra:

Claim (Musk / xAI)Reality check
Opus-level qualityNo independent July leaderboard yet
Faster + cheaperPlausible if sparse/active params tuned for X-scale inference
Beta feedback “strongly positive”Marketing until third-party evals publish

For context, public API today still runs Grok 4.3 ($1.25 / $2.50 per million tokens in prior pricing). See our Grok Build beta piece for the terminal agent lane — separate from the 4.5 model upgrade.

Grok 4.5 vs GPT-5.6 Sol (launch-day framing)

Grok 4.5GPT-5.6 Sol
DistributionX, Grok app, expected APIChatGPT, Codex, API
Data edgeReal-time X/Twitter firehoseBroad web + apps + enterprise
Policy vibeHistorically more permissiveStricter safety + government review path
Agent stackGrok Build (TUI), Voice agentsCodex, ChatGPT Agent, ultra subagents

Pick Grok 4.5 first if: your workflow is X-native (trend scanning, social listening, meme-speed iteration).

Pick Sol first if: you need IDE/Codex maturity and enterprise procurement paths.

xAI’s bigger bet: monthly foundation models

Press coverage of Musk’s June roadmap claims xAI intends new from-scratch foundation models monthly through 2026, with Grok 5 (MoE, ~6T params) targeted Q3. Even if half the cadence slips, July 9 is the start of a high-frequency release culture — opposite of annual flagship drops.

Practical checklist for Thursday

  1. Do not swap production API strings until official model IDs post.
  2. Re-run your golden prompts on 4.3 vs 4.5 — Musk claims efficiency, not just quality.
  3. Compare against Claude Sonnet 5 (free default) before paying premium tiers.
  4. Set token caps — launch-week agents + social hype = runaway spend.

Bottom line

Grok 4.5 is xAI’s bid to steal July 9 headlines from GPT-5.6. Whether it is truly Opus-class is a Thursday benchmark question — the business story is already clear: two flagships, one calendar day, and Musk playing offense after reported Grok app DAU softness in U.S. tracking data.
